What's Included in a Group Benefits Plan?
Every plan we build combines core coverage types tailored to your workforce. Here's what Ontario employers typically include — and why each piece matters.
Extended Health Care
Covers prescription drugs, physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, vision care, and other paramedical services not covered by OHIP. For construction workers this is often the most-used benefit — especially prescription coverage for pain management and physiotherapy after on-site injuries.
Dental Coverage
Basic dental (cleanings, fillings, extractions) is included in most plans. Enhanced plans add major dental (crowns, bridges) and orthodontics. Dental is consistently rated as one of the top reasons employees stay with an employer — and one of the easiest benefits to justify to your team.
Short-Term Disability (STD)
Replaces a portion of an employee's income (typically 60–70%) if they cannot work due to illness or injury. For trades workers — carpenters, electricians, HVAC technicians — short-term disability is critical. A sprained back or broken wrist can take a worker off the job for weeks, and STD keeps them financially stable while they recover.
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Kicks in after short-term disability ends — usually at 17 or 26 weeks — and can cover an employee for years or until age 65. LTD is the most important financial protection for your team and often the most undervalued. Construction workers face above-average injury risk, and a serious accident can end a career. LTD ensures that doesn't also end their financial security.
Life & Critical Illness Insurance
Group life insurance provides a lump-sum payment to an employee's family if they pass away while employed. Critical illness coverage pays out on diagnosis of serious conditions like cancer, heart attack, or stroke. Both are typically low-cost to add to a plan and carry significant perceived value with employees — especially those with families.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Access to confidential counselling, mental health support, financial advice, and legal resources for employees and their families. EAPs are included at no extra cost in most group plans. In the construction industry — where mental health challenges and substance use issues are significantly above average — an EAP can be one of the most impactful parts of your plan.
Out-of-Province Travel Coverage
Emergency medical coverage when employees travel outside Ontario or Canada. Most group plans include a standard travel benefit automatically. For employees who travel for work, take vacations, or have family across the border, this coverage fills a gap that Ontario's provincial health plan doesn't cover after 3 months out of province.
WSIB-Compliant Plan Design
Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) covers workplace injuries for most construction employees — but it does not replace a group benefits plan. We design plans that complement your WSIB obligations without duplicating them, so you're not paying twice for the same coverage and your employees understand what each program covers.
Wellness & Preventive Benefits
Many plans include health spending accounts (HSAs) or wellness spending accounts that employees can use for gym memberships, ergonomic equipment, smoking cessation, or other health-related expenses. These flexible accounts are increasingly popular with younger workforces and cost-effective for employers to offer.
How Group Benefits Pricing Works in Ontario
Group benefits pricing in Ontario is based on several factors: the number of employees enrolled, their ages, the coverage types selected, and the claims history of the group. Unlike individual insurance, group plans use pooled risk — meaning the cost is spread across all enrolled employees rather than underwritten individually.
For most small Ontario businesses (2–25 employees), a basic group benefits plan — including extended health, dental, and basic life insurance — runs between $150 and $400 per employee per month. Adding short-term disability, long-term disability, or a health spending account will increase this, but typically adds significant perceived value relative to cost.
Construction companies often pay slightly more than office-based businesses because of higher rates for disability coverage — trades workers face above-average injury risk, and insurers price this accordingly. However, the right plan design can offset this: by structuring the disability benefit correctly and selecting carriers with experience in the construction sector, we routinely keep total plan costs competitive even for high-risk trades groups.
One important note for Ontario employers: group benefits premiums paid by the employer are generally tax-deductible as a business expense, and employees do not pay income tax on most employer-paid benefits. This makes a group plan one of the most efficient forms of compensation available — the employee receives more value per dollar than they would from an equivalent wage increase.
